If you are looking for a Twitter scheduler, start with the one you already have. The X composer on the web can schedule a post for free. For one account and a few posts a week, that is all you need, and most guides that rank for this search do not tell you that because they are selling a tool.
This guide shows how the free option works, where it stops, and five checks to run on any paid X scheduler before your card is charged. If you already want X in the same calendar as your other networks, the X scheduler page has the short version of how Postlaty does it.
X's free scheduler, in short
Twitter is now X, but the scheduler survived the rename. Here is what you get without paying anyone:
On x.com, the post composer has a schedule option, the small calendar icon under the text box. Pick a date and time and the post waits until then.
Scheduled posts wait with your unsent posts, where you can open one, edit it, move it or delete it before it goes out.
A regular post is up to 280 characters. Longer posts, up to 25,000 characters, need an X subscription, and X help says you cannot schedule a longer post on the web.
A post can carry up to 4 photos, or a video, or a GIF. That rule is the same whether you post now or later.
How to schedule an X post for free
On desktop, it takes less than a minute:
- 1
Open x.com and start a post
Use the box at the top of your home timeline or the Post button in the sidebar.
- 2
Write the post and add media
Keep it inside your character limit. Add up to 4 photos, or one video, or one GIF.
- 3
Click the calendar icon
It sits with the media and emoji icons under the text. Pick the date, the time and check the time zone it shows.
- 4
Confirm, then click Schedule
The button changes from Post to Schedule. Open your unsent posts afterwards to check it is there.
I plan X on a computer. The scheduling option is built into the web composer, so that is where I do the weekly batch, even if I reply to people from my phone.
$0
What X charges to schedule a post on the web
280
Characters in a regular post
4
Photos at most in one post
Where the free scheduler stops
The native scheduler is honest about what it is: a delay on the Post button for the account you are logged into. It starts to hurt when your setup grows:
One account at a time. A founder account and a brand account means switching accounts and checking two separate lists of unsent posts.
No week view. Unsent posts are a list, so gaps and two posts on the same morning are easy to miss.
X only. If the same announcement also goes to LinkedIn, Threads or Bluesky, you write and schedule it again in every app.
Long posts. If you pay X for longer posts, X help says those cannot be scheduled on the web.
If none of that is you, stop here and keep using the calendar icon. If two or more are, a scheduler can pay for itself in saved evenings.
5 checks before you pay for a Twitter scheduler
Every tool on the first page of results says it schedules X posts. Run these five checks during the trial instead of trusting the feature list:
- 1
It publishes through the official X API
You connect with an X authorization screen, not by handing over your password. Ask the tool, and schedule a real test post to see it go out.
- 2
It counts characters the way X does
X counts a link as 23 characters and most emoji as 2. A tool that counts letters lets a post through the composer that X then rejects at publish time, when you are asleep.
- 3
It publishes media the way X accepts it
X takes up to 4 images, or one video, or one GIF, never a mix in the same post. During the trial, schedule one test post with photos and one with a video, and check that both go out.
- 4
It handles every account you run
Connect your founder account and your brand account during the trial and schedule one post to each. Check how the price changes when you add a third.
- 5
It writes a caption per network
An X post and a LinkedIn post about the same launch should not be the same text. Look for one composer with a separate caption for each network.
How Postlaty schedules X posts
I built Postlaty for founders who run their own accounts, so X works like every other network: connect it once with X's authorization screen, then schedule from the same composer and calendar.
Your real character limit
The composer counts characters the way X does and shows 280, or 25,000 if the connected account has X Premium or Premium+. A post over the limit cannot be scheduled.
Images, video or a GIF
Up to 4 images, or one video, or one GIF per post, matching X rules. Keep one media type per X post. Generate the visual in the AI tab first if you need one.
Several X accounts
Connect your founder account and your brand account. Each one is a channel you can pick in the composer.
DMs in Messages
Direct messages from your connected X accounts show in Messages, next to the rest of your inbox.
The same post can go to LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon and your other channels, with a caption written for each network. Pricing counts channels in any mix of networks: 10 on Starter at $29 a month, 20 on Pro at $39 and 50 on Premium at $49. Two X accounts plus LinkedIn, Threads and Bluesky are five channels on Starter. Postlaty has a 7-day free trial. Full details are on pricing.
A 20 minute weekly X routine
Free scheduler or paid tool, this is the routine that keeps an X account alive without living on it:
- 1
Write five posts in one sitting
One lesson, one number from your business, one opinion, one question and one link to something you made. Short beats clever.
- 2
Put the point in the first line
On X the first line is the whole pitch. If a post needs a second paragraph to make sense, cut it or save it for LinkedIn.
- 3
Schedule for your audience time zone
Spread the five posts over the week at the hours your readers are awake, not when you are.
- 4
Leave room for live replies
Scheduled posts keep the account active. Replying to people in real time is what grows it, and no scheduler does that for you.
- 5
Recycle the winner elsewhere
The post that got the most replies is your next LinkedIn or Threads post, rewritten for that network.
If you post the same ideas to Threads and Instagram, the guide on scheduling Threads and Instagram together covers that pair. For the open networks, see cross posting to Bluesky and Mastodon, and for LinkedIn, the free option is in how to schedule LinkedIn posts for free.
What stays in X
Some things you still do in X itself, whichever way you schedule:
Threads of several posts and polls are written in X. Postlaty schedules single posts with text, images, a video or a GIF.
Replies, mentions and post analytics for X are not in Postlaty, because X only offers them on a paid API plan. Check them in X.
The bottom line
To schedule X posts for free, use the calendar icon in the composer on x.com. It covers one account, regular posts and up to 4 photos, and it costs nothing. Pay for a Twitter scheduler only when you run several accounts, want a week view, or post the same ideas to other networks every week, and run the five checks above during the trial. See how Postlaty handles X on the X page and every other network on channels.
